Integrating automated acoustic vocalization data and point count surveys for estimation of bird abundance

چکیده
Monitoring wildlife abundance across space and time is an essential task to study their population dynamics inform effective management. Acoustic recording units are a promising technology for efficiently monitoring bird populations communities. We present integrated modeling framework that combines high-quality but temporally sparse point count survey data with acoustic recordings. Using simulations, we compare the accuracy precision of estimates using differing amounts vocalizations obtained from clustering algorithm, data, subset manually validated vocalizations. also use our in case estimate Eastern Wood-Pewee (Contopus virens) Vermont, U.S.A. The simulation reveals combining via model improves compared models informed by either or alone. Combining only small number surveys yields without need validating any identified data. Within study, provided moderate support decline this region. Adjusting count period strategies to improve the accuracy of forest bird abundance estimates from point transect distance sampling surveys
Although point transect distance sampling methods have become widely used in surveys of forest birds, there has been no attempt to tailor field methods to maximize the accuracy of abundance estimates by minimizing the effects of violations of the method’s critical assumptions, which are: (1) birds at distance 0 m are detected with certainty, (2) birds are detected at their initial location and ...
متن کاملBayesian Spatial Modeling of Data from Avian Point Count Surveys
We present a unified framework for modeling bird survey data collected at spatially replicated survey sites in the form of repeated counts or detection history counts, through which we model spatial dependence in bird density and variation in detection probabilities due to changes in covariates across the landscape. The models have a complex hierarchical structure that makes them suited to Baye...
متن کاملTime-of-detection Method for Estimating Abundance from Point-count Surveys
—Point-count surveys are o en used to collect data on the abundance and distribution of birds, generally as an index of relative abundance. Valid comparison of these indices assumes that the detection process is comparable over space and time. These restrictive assumptions can be eliminated by estimating detection probabilities directly. We generalize a recently proposed removal model for estim...
متن کاملVocalization activity of breeding shorebirds: documentation of its seasonal decline and applications for breeding bird surveys
We documented vocalization activity of breeding shorebirds at two sites in northern and western Alaska, on the Colville River Delta and on the Yukon – Kuskokwim Delta. At both sites, number of calling individuals decreased throughout the season. Variation in vocalization activity was significantly higher at the Colville River Delta towards the end of the season, while weather variables affected...
متن کاملBird biodiversity assessments in temperate forest: the value of point count versus acoustic monitoring protocols
Effective monitoring programs for biodiversity are needed to assess trends in biodiversity and evaluate the consequences of management. This is particularly true for birds and faunas that occupy interior forest and other areas of low human population density, as these are frequently under-sampled compared to other habitats. For birds, Autonomous Recording Units (ARUs) have been proposed as a su...
